at the Herefordshire Art Open Exhibition 2009.
Oil pastel and charcoal. 350mm x 350mm
Joanna Griffiths, based in mid Wales, was brought up in the heavily industrialised valleys of the south Wales coalfield where she spent most of her 1960s childhood. She studied at Hertfordshire College of Art and Design and The London College of Printing.
Following a successful 25-year career as a graphic design consultant, Joanna returned to her artistic roots in 2006 and now exhibits regularly.
A recurring theme in Joanna’s work is solitary figures set in the post-industrial landscapes of south Wales. Her subdued oil pastel paintings capture the contemplative atmosphere of the landscapes she seeks out and describes as having a ‘bleak beauty’. By contrast, much of her recent work features dramatic skies full of movement, colour and light set against the hills of mid Wales where she lives.
